Q&A with Hunters & Heels at Bobbi Brown - Bath
I remember the first ever Bobbi Brown makeup product I purchased back in my late teens/early twenties was the Shimmer Brick Compact. Like you, I’m sure, I have tried and tested many makeup products over the years, discovering beauty brands that I have stayed loyal to because their products work so well for me. One of my firm favourites has to be Bobbi Brown - I will always pop in-store when I want to treat myself! Those beautiful bronzers and blushers, smokey eye mascaras promising thicker, longer lashes (yes please!), not to mention the sumptuous choice of lipsticks, perfect for any occasion. Their makeup line is dreamy, and, I quite simply feel like a kid in a candy store the moment I peruse their collection.
The lovely team at Bobbi Brown in Bath recently got in touch to invite me over to their shop on Milsom Street, to meet Bobbi Brown Social Content Editor and creator of Hunters & Heels, Lauren Shepherd, and, Bobbi Brown Pro Artist, Zara Findlay. Lauren and Zara were in-store for one day only to celebrate the new shade extension launch of Bobbi Brown’s amazing foundations. Having followed Lauren’s adventures on her blog, YouTube channel and social media outlets for the past couple of years, it was so exciting to actually meet her in person!
I couldn’t wait to have the opportunity to host a Q&A session with Lauren, who was as every bit as gorgeous, warm and personable as she appears online. To discover what Bobbi Brown products Lauren can’t live without, her top tips and beauty buys for new and tired mums, when and why she established Hunters & Heels, who inspires her the most in her industry, plus, much, much more, then please read on…
The Bathonian Interviews:
Lauren Shepherd - Bobbi Brown Social Content Editor and Creator of Hunters & Heels
What does your role as a Social Content Editor for Bobbi Brown entail?
From week to week, I create content for their social media channels. We often have a focus, such as Mother’s Day coming up, and I’ll be sharing my favourite pictures for Mother’s Day over on Bobbi Brown’s Instagram feed and stories.
I also work with other influencers, not necessarily in the beauty and fashion world - instead, I tend to reach out to lifestyle influencers and mums. I introduce them to Bobbi Brown and give them the ‘Bobbi Brown experience’. I also get to do things like this, meet other influencers and support new store launches too.
As well as being a Social Content Editor for Bobbi Brown, you have a very successful blogging and YouTube career. When and why did you establish your beautiful British motherhood and lifestyle blog, Hunters & Heels?
Hunters & Heels was my Instagram name which my husband, Colin, came up with about five years ago. It was when I really started to get into Instagram - I previously had a random Instagram name which I wanted to change - I was keen to come up with something a bit different. At that point in time, I was an Area Manager for Bobbi Brown, so I was in the city during the day wearing heels, but as we lived in the countryside, I’d be in my wellies at the weekends! So, it was this that gave my husband the idea of naming my blog, Hunters & Heels.
I decided to start a blog when I went on maternity leave with my first son, Ollie. I think, really, as a way of documenting motherhood, but also as a way to connect with other mums. Because of the nature of my work, I didn’t have an office to make friends in, and as I was often travelling all over the place, I thought this would be a great way to meet other mums and connect with like-minded people.
Fortunately, I already had a few thousand followers on Instagram, and so this really helped with my readership. As soon as I launched my blog, rather than starting out from scratch, I already had an audience which was great. It progressed really quickly from there and I was amazed when brands, which I really loved, like The White Company, began contacting me. However, after my maternity leave, I went back to working full-time with Bobbi Brown. It wasn’t until I had my second son, Rory, that I thought this was my chance to see if I could make something out of my blog. I knew at this stage that I didn’t want to go back full-time, but, I wasn’t sure what else I could do. So, it’s been amazing that Bobbi Brown have created this role for me, which means I am now able to merge both.
What’s been the highlight of your blogging and YouTube career to date?
The first thing that springs to mind would be working for brands that I adore. Plus, the amazing travel opportunities I have experienced to date, such as visiting Milan, Lake Como and Tokyo, as well as getting to take my family on lovely holidays too!
Which social media influencers would you say are your inspiration?
I love Rosie Londoner! I remember discovering her and feeling like I could be her friend, and that was my first experience of really being able to identify with somebody that I didn’t know. This inspired me to be like, ‘I could do that,’ I really respect her and think she’s amazing. Although there are lots of influencers that inspire me, she’s still my favourite!
How do you balance what I imagine must be a busy work life with being a mum to your sons?
I don’t think any of us feel like we really have a perfect balance because mum-guilt always creeps into everything, right?! You feel guilty if you work or guilty if you don’t. But, in terms of balancing my various jobs and keeping all the plates spinning in the air at the same time, I try to compartmentalise. This is my biggest piece of advice to any working mum. I try to be really present when I’m with my boys, but then when I’m at my desk, it’s all about work!
Given the nature of your work, do you like to give yourself a digital detox from time to time?
I don’t give myself a digital detox even though I hear about it so much and I’m like, I should probably do this! However, I don’t feel negative about the time I spend on social media. I know that a lot of people do, but, it’s not something that personally concerns me. I actually find it quite relaxing!
What are your aspirations for the future of Hunters & Heels?
There is so much I want to do with Hunters & Heels! I would love to do another ‘Insta Meet’ - I feel really passionate about bringing to life the people that are behind the squares. I don’t feel like I want that barrier of only communicating online. I really want to do something else, maybe like an ‘Insta Retreat’ which would possibly be overnight and a real luxury treat. Hopefully that will happen this summer, which would be great.
And then, I have lots of ideas for, maybe, collaborations to create a product. I feel that there are a lot of things that I want but can’t get. I am in the process of talking to friends who make things and this may be something that I can look into in the future. I can’t say too much as I don’t want to spoil the surprise…
What one Bobbi Brown product can you not live without on a daily basis?!
Extra Eye Repair Cream! It’s absolutely amazing! Perfect for puffiness, dehydration, fine lines and dark circles.
Can you tell me what your all-time favourite Bobbi Brown hero products are?
I did a little video on this because I get asked it so much! It would have to be the Extra Eye Repair Cream, again! As well as Corrector and Instant Full Coverage Concealer for under the eye, Skin Foundation Stick, Pot Rouge for Lips and Cheeks, which is the cream blusher. I’m not going to say a lipstick because there are so many, but, a lipstick! And, Smokey Eye Mascara.
Finally, just a couple of mum-related questions…
I’m about to become a mum myself, do you have any top tips for those early days of parenthood?
Yes, definitely, there are so many! The first thing I’d say is you can’t do it all on your own, even though you want to, just don’t even try! Everyone wants to help you, your husband, family, friends, so do give them jobs. Sleep when you need to sleep and just try and chill because it is amazing and the best thing you’ll ever do!
Babies cry is the other one, which, second time around I knew that, so when Rory cried, I didn’t panic or flap - I felt like he knew and could see that I was calm, and so he was too. I felt really confident breastfeeding him in public, if he cried in a coffee shop I just dealt with it. They do cry and it’s ok, so I’d say just try and relax and enjoy it as much as possible because it does fly by.
What top three beauty products would you recommend I reach for as a new mum?
Extra Eye Repair Cream which I have already said! The Corrector and Instant Full Coverage Concealer, if you do suffer from darkness under your eyes, these products are a game changer! Pale Pink Blush or Pot Rouge are amazing for making you look really healthy and bright and you can put either on without any other face make up on. Grabbing a bit for your cheeks will give you a really fresh look.
