Around and About Bath
Given Bath is rich in history and a fascinating World Heritage city, it will come as no surprise that it is a popular destination for guided walking tours. I'm sure if you are local to the area, you will have spotted local guides on foot, some often dressed in period-costume, gathering their groups by iconic landmarks such as the Royal Crescent, The Circus or The Abbey. Yet, there are often forgotten, yet vitally important parts of Bath that are left undiscovered on these tours. Georgian Bath has a darker underbelly and a plethora of hidden gems located away from the madding crowds, waiting to be unearthed. Tourists, and many locals alike, unwittingly pass them by with no knowledge of the wealth of stories and coded symbolism that awaits them in these places. I, for one, can vouch for that! May I introduce to you then, a local tour company that will take you deeper into Bath's intriguing past and away from the tourist treadmill?!
I'm speaking of Around and About Bath who will offer you an immersive, informative and wonderfully unique experience as you travel "beyond the ordinary and connect with history, stories, experiences and places that make our country so special." What sets Around and About Bath apart from the majority of local tour companies is their approach to numbers. They keep tour group sizes to a maximum of eight people, thus ensuring a more personable, intimate experience for all.
Last Monday morning, I had the pleasure of joining the lovely team of Around and About Bath for a preview of their latest tour, which is new to Summer 2018; Behind the Façade: Bath's Backstories and Backstreets.
Our tour was led by the company's founder, Jules Mittra - an avid traveler and former history and politics teacher. Jules took the decision in August 2016 to change career path and establish Around and About Bath. His mission? To create a company that enables visitors to see and experience the England he knows and loves so well. The passion and knowledge that Jules has for Bath, its history, its juicy secrets and stories (that most of us would be none the wiser to), is second to none. His warm, kind and charismatic personality oozes enthusiasm - you can be sure never to experience a dull moment on one of his tours!
The Behind the Façade: Bath's Backstories and Backstreets tour is now up and running for you to discover and enjoy. I was invited to share and promote their new tour with you here, but, I am fully aware that it would be nonsensical to detail each destination we visited - no one likes a spoiler! Jules and his team deliberately refrain from sharing what you'll see and do before you join the tour - keeping it under wraps is "part of the magic", as they say! So, my intention with this post today is to simply give you a flavour of the tour. I have thus curated a selection of my favourite moments from the morning. I will just mention here that you may recognise some of the places I have captured (one or two of the places we stopped by are too recognisable!), so this is just a forewarning that if you really would prefer not to know what Jules has in store for you, then look away now! Otherwise, I hope the following photos give you a flavour of what to expect, and that they'll prompt you to book a tour with Around and About Bath.
Thank you so much to Jules for such a wonderful, insightful, fun and informative morning, and to Nigel for the kind invitation to join the launch of the Behind the Façade: Baths Backstories and Backstreets tour.
Whether you are a local or live further afield, I would really recommend checking out Around and About Bath. You can do so over here, and don't forget, this is perfect territory for discovering the lesser known parts of Bath...
