Kiehl's - Bath
A friend once said to me that when she reached her late twenties, it prompted her to re-evaluate her daily skincare routine. Now that I also find myself considerably closer to the age of 30 than 21 (where do the years go, I mean, really?!), I'm keen to reassess what I should be using on my skin. For most of my twenties, I've been using the Simple Kind to Skin range, mainly because I tend to be a creature of habit, sticking to what I know has been working well for me. However, much like having a therapeutic Spring clean (that's due soon!), I feel the time has come to sample other beauty brands on the market, and discover what products will be beneficial for my skin right now. So, with this in mind, I recently visited Kiehl's in Bath for a complimentary personal skin consultation...
Greeted by the Store Manager, Paula, and the Assistant Store Manager, Gabriel, I received such a warm and friendly welcome. I was kindly offered a deliciously soothing pot of T2 chamomile tea, whilst Gabriel set to work determining my optimum skincare regime...
After filling out a personal details form, Gabriel asked me a series of questions, such as; "What's my current skincare routine? Do I work in an air-conditioned office? How does my skin feel in the morning after a shower?".
Armed with all my answers, Gabriel then carried out a two stage test on my skin to identify its moisture and hydration levels.
Firstly, Gabriel placed a swab on the surface of the skin (as demonstrated on Paula below) to test the moisture levels. I was surprised to discover that my skin type is 'normal to oily', as I'd have put money on it being 'normal to dry'. However, I was pleased to hear that oily skin is "a well-fed skin, which means less lines and wrinkles in the future because the skin is more plump".
Reassured that my skin was "well-fed", Gabriel then checked the level of hydration - the optimum is 40%. To my shock, mine came out at 27%! It was comforting to learn that given the time of year, this percentage is quite normal (phew!) Yet, Paula's levels were at 36.2%. I completely appreciate that everyone's skin types vary massively, but seeing how much lower my levels were, I was keen for Gabriel to work his magic and suggest lotions and potions that he felt would rescue my dehydrated skin!
To the glossy cabinets he went, seeking out products that would send me on my way to having healthier, radiant looking skin... It was't long before Gabriel very helpfully recommended a morning and night time skincare routine tailored around my skin type. It goes as follows:
Step 1 - Cleanse skin with: Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash. "Apply a small amount to clean fingertips. Gently massage into damp facial areas in upward, circular motions. Avoid immediate eye area. Rinse thoroughly or remove excess with damp face wash." *Gabriel suggested I use the cleansing foaming face wash just 2 to 3 times a week.
Step 2 - Tone skin with: Calendula Herbal Extract Alcohol-Free Toner. "Moisten a sterile cotton pad with facial toner, and apply to skin in areas where needed, avoiding the eye area." *Tone the skin day and night!
Step 3 - Moisturise skin with: Ultra Facial Cream SPF 30. "Apply cream to clean facial skin day or night as needed to combat moisture depletion." *An important factor to me, was to find a day cream with a high sun protection, so I was delighted when Gabriel recommended me this product!
*Gabriel mentioned that I could swap my day cream with the: Ultra Light Daily Defense SPF 50. The product "intensely moisturises the skin and utilizes a high level of sun filters Mexory SX and Mexoryl XI to provide the skin with effective UVA and UVB broad-spectrum sunscreen protection."
Step 1 - Remove makeup with: Midnight Recovery Botanical Cleansing Oil. "Gently massage a few pumps’ worth of product in a circular motion into your skin. Add water to gently melt and dissolve all traces of dirt, oil, sunscreen, and face and eye makeup; then gently rinse away."
Step 2 - Cleanse skin with: Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash. As above!
Step 3 - Tone skin with: Calendula Herbal Extract Alcohol-Free Toner. Also as above!
Step 4 - Restore eyes with: Midnight Recovery Eye. "Dispense 2 drops of eye treatment onto fingertips. Gently pat under eyes and along the orbital bone without pulling the skin."
Step 5 - Moisturise skin with: Midnight Recovery Concentrate. "Apply 2-3 drops on the inside of your fingertips. Warm the oil against your other hand. Gently press hands onto the cheeks, forehead and chin to evenly distribute the application, then massage gently into the skin."
* You can wear this alone, or under moisturiser. Gabriel suggested the: Super Multi-Corrective Cream SPF 30. "Apply to face and neck."
Although there was absolutely no pressure to buy any of the products, how could I walk away from my new dream team day and night routine?! I already have the Midnight Recovery Concentrate and Super Multi-Corrective Cream SPF 30, so made a note of all the other items. Thankfully, just a few weeks later, I fortunately received the products for my birthday! I now have one very happy beauty cabinet indeed!
Next on my wish list is this Powerful-Strength Line-Reducing Concentrate which looks amazing, especially as it says it 'boosts skins radiance whilst visibly reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles'.
I'd like to say thank you so much to Paula and Gabriel for all of their invaluable help, guidance and for gifting me such a generous goodie bag of samples to take home. They were incredibly knowledgeable on each and every Kiehl's product, so if you need a bit of a helping hand, as I did, I'd definitely recommend booking a skin consultation. They will be sure to point you in the right direction :) I will be sure to pop back in-store in a few months time to check in on my moisture and hydration levels. I can't wait to find out what wonders these gorgeous Kiehl's products are doing to my skin!
