Las Iguanas Relaunch Party - Bath
Last month, Bath saw the refurbishment of the Latin American restaurant; Las Iguanas. To celebrate 21 years in our city, the venue underwent a vibrant makeover and hosted a great party to mark the occasion. You can now discover a tropical plant wall, the warm glow of neon lights, splashes of flamboyant colour across the interior decor, plus, a fabulously sunny cocktail list and newly designed Autumn/Winter menu too. There is certainly much to make sure you feel those Latin vibes! Along with local press, media and fellow food bloggers, Scott and I joined in the festivities a few weeks ago…
Welcomed by beautiful, bejewelled carnival dancers, the wintry walk over to the restaurant soon felt like a distant memory!
We were shown to our table and presented with the colourful, revamped menus. Excited to sample their new food offerings, we mused over dishes synonymous with Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Peru and beyond. Soon settling for a taste of Brazil and Mexico, alongside a merry helping of cocktails! If you love Happy Hour, you will be delighted to discover that Las Iguanas offers 2-for-1 cocktails all day, every day.
But, to pep up our tastebuds, we began with tapas, choosing from a great selection of dishes…
Opting for the ‘Havana Club and Jerk BBQ Glazed Pork Ribs’ (£6.50), and ‘Copacabana Chicken’ (£6.95). The aforementioned pork ribs were coated in a sticky rum glaze, peppered with crispy onion and chilli. Did they sit looking pretty for long?! If you blinked twice, you’d have missed them! The masa fried chicken, which arrived with a spicy amarillo aioli was just as succulent and tasty.
There is the option to share three tapas dishes for £15.95, or, 5 dishes for £25.95.
Moving onto our mains, Scott went on a culinary journey to Brazil with his ‘Carne de Sol’ (£15.95). Slow-cooked salt cured beef top rib served with cassava mash, cassava crisps, winter greens, a rich beef gravy and caramelised onion jus.
On the contrary, I headed to Mexico! You just can’t beat a comforting ‘Chilli Con Carne’ (£11.95), can you?! A rich chunky beef and black bean chilli, with spring onion rice and jalapeño buttermilk cornbread. There was the option to choose a spiced butter to melt into the chilli, either a ‘Cocoa and Ancho Chilli’ (mild), ‘Smoky Chipotle Butter’ (medium) or, ‘Habanero and Cayenne Chilli’ (hot). However, our waitress suggested a helping of crème fraîche if I didn’t fancy any extra heat at all. I opted for this, and found it added a refreshing zing to the palette after every bite.
We toasted our evening with not one, not, two, not three, but FOUR cocktails between us! Hurrah for their 2-for-1 Happy Hour! Admittedly, I stuck with a non-alcoholic ‘Apple Mojo-Less’ (£4.95 for two) which consisted of mint, lime, apple and soda. Whilst across the table, Scott happily sipped on a couple of ‘Caipirinhas’ (£8.95 for two). A muddle of Las Iguanas Magnifica Cachaça, lime and sugar - happy holidays!
We enjoyed a fun evening at Las Iguanas and, having never dined at the chain before, were impressed with the warm, attentive service, the spirited atmosphere and the fantastic variety of cuisines on the menu. The lavish supply of cocktails were a great addition to our meal too. If you would like to venture across to the exotic climes of South America, then visit Las Iguanas this season. Many thanks to Bea at Pam Lloyd for the kind invite, and to the team in Bath for their great hospitality!
