Smashburger - Bath
The launch of Smashburger in Bath, on Thursday 25th May, coincided with National Burger Month. What better time to roll up those sleeves and get stuck in to some flippin' fine burgers and fries then? Well, follow me this way towards those bright red balloons swaying gently in the evening breeze on Southgate Street...
... as I have a burger-licious treat in store for you!
First up, I am going to mention that it was something of a smashing revelation to discover that this American born restaurant chain have one simple notion in mind. That is, to deliver each of their handcrafted burgers "smashed, seared and seasoned to order, using fresh, never frozen 100% British beef." Ensuring they work with quality ingredients from start to finish means you certainly won't find any frozen patties sandwiched between your buns! That certainly gets a big thumbs up from Scott and I.
Arriving last Wednesday evening, just a few weeks after their opening, we were delighted to receive such a warm welcome from their friendly, attentive staff. We took our seats in one of the booths in the bright, airy downstairs quarters that oozed a real trendy vibe, thanks to its industrial-inspired interiors.
From exposed brick walls and overhead steel pipes, to filament bulbs and neon lights...
... with all those funky fixtures and fittings, it's safe to say, Smashburger has got it all going on!
Now it was time to get down to business...
Excited to test out their smashed-to-order burgers and artisan buns, those tempting signature sides, a Häagen–Dazs handspun shake (we can think about a HIIT workout tomorrow!) and some drinks to wash it all down with, we scanned the menus.
Scott opted for a 'Create Your Own'. Ticking off all of his favourite ingredients so he could enjoy a winning combination.
Once we had placed our orders at the counter and received our buzzer, we returned to our table, eagerly awaiting for our timer to spring into action. (It flashes red when your food is on its way).
It wasn't long before we spied our food up at the pass.
Then we happily spent the rest of our evening consuming more calories and carbs than you could shake a stick at! But in my mind, it's definitely okay to spoil yourself to a really tasty banquet like this, as long as you do so in moderation, and, not every day of the week!
So here we have the ultra luxurious 'Truffle Mushroom Swiss' (£6.75). A deliciously caramelised, perfectly cooked beef patty wrapped in molten aged Swiss cheese, truffle mayo and sautéed chestnut mushrooms, encased in a pillowy Smash bun.
Anything with truffle gets my seal of approval!
Up next, the ultimate showstopper; Scott's 'Create Your Own'. A large burger stacked to the brim with a beef patty, aged Swiss cheese, a fried egg, haystack onions and grilled mushrooms. This totalled to £12.45. Feeling hungry?
Stay with me a few moments longer as we haven't finished yet! Here we have the hearty 'Harvest Salad' (£8.75) that comes with mixed lettuce leaves, blue cheese, raisins, dried cranberries, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and tomatoes, all coated in a balsamic dressing.
Alongside a side portion of 'Haystack Onions' (£3.25) that were perfectly crispy and thin.
There wasn't a soggy onion ring in sight. These were cooked to perfection and even more moreish when dunked into the side of BBQ sauce. Each deep-fried onion is peeled by hand, not a job I'd be putting my hands up for!
The 'Smashfries' (£3.25) are tossed in rosemary, garlic and olive oil. Good news too; they are trans-fat free.
All this fine food was thirsty work! So we selected the 'Unlimited Coca-Cola Freestyle' (£2.95) which meant returning to the self-service, touch-screen fountain as frequently as we pleased.
Pretty handy given there are hundreds of flavours to choose from. You could even go wild and try mixing combos too. How about Dr Pepper and Fanta? Would that work? Who know's! Let me know how you get on.
To conclude our meal, we couldn't resist sampling one of their 'hand-Spun Shakes' for that ultimate sweet fix. Did you know that Häagen–Dazs started manufacturing larger tubs of their ice-creams for the UK market, just so Smashburger could bring over their hand-spun shakes. Scott chose the 'Oreo' shake (£5.25). Here's a sneak peek...
