Cookery Masterclass and Preview Supper at Tapas Revolution - Bath

Tapas Revolution is set to open this week in Bath's newly transformed restaurant quarter of Little SouthGate, on Thursday 1st June. Last week, I was kindly invited to attend a cookery masterclass hosted by Omar Allibhoy, Spanish celebrity chef and founder of Tapas Revolution, as well as getting the chance to preview his tapas menu ahead of its grand opening...

Bath becomes Omar's seventh restaurant in his Tapas Revolution group, so us lucky Bathonian's, and visitors to the city, can enjoy a taste of Spain without having to hop on a plane or even take a train to London!

Having been trained by one of the world's greatest chef's, Ferran Adrià, at his 3 star michelin restaurant, 'elBulli,' in the Costa Brava, Omar then brought his culinary expertise to the UK. Seeing there was a gap in the market for a fast, simple, easy style of Spanish cooking he loved and lived by, Omar set about opening his first Tapas Revolution restaurant in 2010 at Westfield, Shepherds Bush. Since then, Omar's collection of Spanish restaurants has grown to include: Bluewater, Shoreditch, Birmingham, Sheffield and Newcastle, and now, Bath. Not only has Omar helped to transform the Spanish food scene here in the UK, but in recent years he has brought out two successful cookery books, the first (of which is aptly named 'Tapas Revolution') was "the fastest selling Spanish cookbook of 2013." The second, 'Spanish Made Simple' became a "best-seller for consecutive weeks on Amazon."

That's cause for celebration!

Scott and I were excited to meet Omar and toast to his success with delicious drinks at the restaurant bar...

... a 'Limonada Casera' (homemade lemonade with a touch of saffron) and a 'Rhubarb and Peach' (homemade juice with a touch of rose water and lemon).

Spain has become Europe's largest gin consumer over the last five years, so it would only seem right to have a great selection of G&T's on the menu! All of the gins have been sourced from Spanish gin distilleries who use fresh regional botanicals, ensuring a fine aromatic spirit is produced. Don't worry, you will of course find sangria on the menu too!

We enjoyed a few light bites at the bar before heading to the kitchen to prepare our very own paella's, Chef Omar's way!...

The simplest, freshest of ingredients were used as we followed Omar's cookery masterclass, step by step... Into teams of 3 we went, rustling up our delicious paella's...

... picking up so many useful tips from Omar along the way.

An hour or so later and we were tucking into our freshly cooked, piping hot paella.

Cocktails flowed and tasty tapas dishes filled our table too...

Here we have 'Berenjenas fritas Con Miel' - crispy fried aubergine with a spiced honey and thyme dressing (£5.50).

'Pulpo a La Gallega' - steamed octopus with potatoes and pimentón paprika (£6.95).

Chef's favourite; 'Croquetas De Jamón' - deep-fried Ibérico ham and béchamel croquettes (£4.95).

One of my favourites! 'Patatas Bravas' - roasted potatoes with spicy tomato sauce and alioli (£3.95).

Then the ULTIMATE, King of all sweet treats... Drum roll please...

A 'Torrija' - caramelised brioche bun soaked in custard, served warm (£5.25) is the official, traditional Easter dessert of Spain (we can certainly forgive them for serving us them in May). It is simply worth a visit to Tapas Revolution, no matter how near or far you live, for this dish alone!

We can't wait to return with friends for tapas style-eating, great gossip and perhaps a cheeky sangria or two! Huge thanks to Omar and his welcoming team at Tapas Revolution for treating us to an authentic taste of Spain. You can find out more about the restaurant here...
