Healing Health Retreat with Lisa Barnes and Mirella Lamarina, Bath Yoga Studio - Bath

What could be more beneficial than taking a little time out to cleanse the body and soul just before the festive season gets into full swing? Well, if like me, you find yourself rushing about more than usual at this time of year, then let me enlighten you! I recently attended a 'Healing Health Retreat' at the Bath Yoga Studio. Hosted by Lisa Barnes, health and wellness coach at Living Better Health, and, Mirella Lamarina, experienced yoga instructor at Sol Power Yoga, the retreat promised a much needed pre-Christmas detox. The perfect opportunity to become more centrally grounded and recharge your batteries? Yes and yes! The chance to momentarily escape the hustle and bustle of every day life? You got it! I certainly couldn't wait to step on the yoga mat...

Lisa (left) and Mirella (right) kindly invited me along to the first part of this three day explorative journey to better health, mind and fitness. Kickstarting at 1:30pm last Friday afternoon, we began with brief introductions. A great way to get to know one another; we introduced ourselves to the group, shared our experiences of juicing, yoga, detoxing and meditation, and spoke of our own personal goals for the weekend ahead.

Before the classes commenced, we enjoyed a delicious cucumber, apple, lemon, ginger and turmeric powder juice. Whilst we quenched our thirst, Lisa shared lots of useful tips on juicing and the ways in which we can implement juice into our busy lifestyles.

Soon after, we explored meditation, breathing and chanting. It was time to completely unwind, relax our faces, our bodies, and silence our "internal chatter." The afternoon's main objective was to "get out of our heads." We were encouraged to focus on our breathing rather than our thoughts, which in turn would help ground us, and ensure we achieved as much as we possibly could out of the upcoming classes. 

The meditation began with a role play exercise where we each assumed a "different hat" (such as chef, teacher, cleaner or mother) giving us the opportunity to verbalise our internal thoughts which culminated in group chanting and meditation.

Mirella then led an hour of yoga which had the perfect balance of poses and stretches suitable for beginners, but also ideal for those keen to take their abilities to the next level. With ~10 years of experience, Mirella's hands on approach proved invaluable in making sure we were all assuming the correct positions. We were instructed to concentrate on our breathing, poses and postures, and it was the most calming, relaxing way to spend a Friday afternoon! 

We then had a quick 15 minute break after our yoga class, so I took this opportunity to take some additional photos. I was mindful throughout the afternoon not to pick up my camera during the meditation or deep relaxation exercises, as I felt it would be unfair to disturb the focus required at these times.

We were soon back on our yoga mats, ready to embrace the final stages of the afternoon.

After exploring meditation and practising new yoga poses, we got back up onto our feet...

We were soon tasting a nutritious beetroot, berries, ginger and apple juice drink. Freshly prepared and cold from the fridge, it was the perfect pick-me-up!

Lisa and Mirella then gave an inspirational reading from world-renowned yoga master B.K.S Iyengar.

Afterwards, we settled into comfortable sleeping positions on our yoga mats, the lights were dimmed and deep meditation music filled the studio. Lisa spoke out softly to the room, facilitating us on our journey towards inner calm. When we all re-surfaced back to reality, Lisa asked us to pick out an Oracle Card and turn it over...

My reading felt most apt...!

We all know how stressful and hectic life can be with its many twists and turns, so it is more important than ever to pay attention to your body and mind. No matter what level of experience you have with yoga or meditation, Lisa and Mirella, with their wealth of knowledge, both personally and professionally, will be able to assist you on your own personal journey. l would certainly recommend their Healing Health Retreats, I came away from my experience last Friday afternoon feeling refreshed and enlightened.
