Fowey Hall Hotel - Cornwall
I must be the only person in the whole of the West country who has never paid Cornwall a visit! Having heard so many wonderful stories about this picture perfect county, I have been itching to find out what all the fuss is about.
For my sister's 30th birthday In June, my family planned a surprise weekend away at the Fowey Hall Hotel in Fowey, Cornwall. The venue was chosen with my young niece and nephew in mind; we wanted a super relaxed, child-friendly hotel to celebrate my sister's special birthday. I wish I had taken more snaps but found myself occupied most of the weekend by two excitable children, heaps of sunshine, ice creams, sandy beaches and pretty rock pools, plus kayaking on the estuary with my other half!
The Fowey Hall Hotel is said to have inspired Kenneth Grahame's 'The Wind in the Willows'. This enchanting former family mansion certainly exudes grandeur and charm and I wouldn't have been surprised if Toady turned up in a classic sports car followed by a billowing puff of smoke. But, sadly not on this occasion...
Everywhere you turn there's a relaxed, child-friendly welcome; from the varying sizes of Joules wellies lined up at the hotel's entrance, to colourful buckets and spades and fishing nets waiting to be borrowed for a day by the sea.
We were shown to our room which I find is always the best bit of the trip! Our new home was furnished with a mix of traditional French furniture and contemporary fittings; from the ornate desk mirror to the smart matching arm chairs and large white leather bed. I noticed that the furniture was a little distressed and worn in places. However, the complimentary tea making facilities and pretty coastal views made up for it! So, we soon forgot about the odd bit of wear and tear here and there.
Our room enjoyed pretty views over the hotel's croquet lawn, roof tops of the Fowey Estuary and Cornish coastline in the far distance too.
I couldn't resist running a hot bath as soon I had put my bags down. The hotel uses certified organic Voya products based on hand-harvested seaweed so I poured those delicious scents into my bubbly bath. They smelt divine, so I happily doused myself in seaweed scented bubbles and creams before heading out for our family supper that evening.
The hotel grounds are dotted with great amenities such as a zip wire, child and baby swings hanging from branches, a small slide, badminton net, trampoline and a classic swingball set. There are happy chickens in a coup to show your children and picnic blankets to borrow from reception if you want to relax outdoors in the sunshine.
Fowey Hall Hotel offers something for the whole family; there are DVD's to borrow from the library, plenty of games and activities to occupy the whole family indoors and out, quiet corners by fireplaces providing the perfect spot to catch up on the day's newspaper, or, a book to lose yourself in for the afternoon. If you fancy a rest-bite from excitable children then there is an outdoor jacuzzi and adult only swimming times in the indoor pool too. Plus, there is a spa and adult's-only restaurant. I just have to comment on the amazing, colourful table cloths that come out before breakfast, lunch and dinner in the children's restaurant; they add such a homely touch.
Travelling as a family, we all felt incredibly relaxed and welcomed at The Fowey Hall Hotel. Even the staff dress in colourful shirts and wear smiles on their faces from dawn until dusk! I would certainly recommend this venue if you fancy a long weekend away. However, I suggest booking up in advance if you are thinking about a June - September vacation, as I am sure this will be a popular destination in the summer months.
